PennDOT's knowledge test is 18 questions; 15 correct passes.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Pennsylvania questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. A funeral procession with its lights on is passing through an intersection. You should:
A Join the procession to get through faster
B Let the procession pass without cutting into it
C Sound your horn to clear the way
D Drive between vehicles if there is a gap
Do not cut into or interrupt a procession, even if you have a green light, unless directed by an officer.
Q2. In Pennsylvania, after you move or change your name, you must notify PennDOT within:
A 30 days
B 5 days
C 15 days
D 90 days
The rule applies even when you are moving out of Pennsylvania.
Q3. You are in the left lane of a highway and a line of traffic builds up behind you. You should:
A Tap your brakes as a warning
B Slow down to make them back off
C Keep your speed and stay put
D Move to the right lane when it is safe
The left lane is for passing. Once traffic stacks up behind you, moving right is both safer and, in many states, required.
Q4. You arrive at an intersection where the traffic signal is completely dark because of a power failure. You should:
A Proceed as if you had a green light
B Treat it as a four-way stop
C Wait until the signal works again
D Treat it as a yield and keep moving
A dark signal is treated as an all-way stop. Stop, then take turns in the order vehicles arrived.
Q5. At night, pedestrians are hardest to see:
A Outside the reach of your headlights and in dark clothing
B Only near intersections
C Only in rain
D Only on lit streets
Most pedestrian deaths happen after dark. Lower your speed so your stopping distance fits inside your headlight range.
Q6. The minimum age for a Pennsylvania learner permit is:
A 17
B 18
C 16
D 15
The permit requires a vision screening and the knowledge test, plus parental consent for applicants under 18.
Q7. Black ice is most likely to form:
A In the middle of a sunny afternoon
B On steep hills only
C On bridges, overpasses and shaded spots
D On gravel roads only
Bridges and shaded stretches lose heat fastest. If the road looks wet but spray has stopped coming off other cars, suspect ice.
Q8. Under Pennsylvania's Act 18, using a hand-held mobile device while driving is:
A Allowed at a red light
B Allowed on local roads
C Allowed for drivers over 21
D Prohibited for all drivers
Pennsylvania moved to a hands-free standard for all drivers. Texting was already banned as a primary offense.
Q9. When parking along a curb in Pennsylvania, your vehicle may be no more than:
A 6 feet from the curb
B 12 inches from the curb
C 24 inches from the curb
D 3 feet from the curb
Parking as close as possible keeps your car out of the travel lane and your doors out of passing traffic.
Q10. Seat belts work best because they:
A Stop the car faster
B Keep you in position and let the strongest parts of your body absorb the force
C Are only needed on highways
D Prevent the airbag from deploying
Belts keep you behind the wheel and away from the windshield, and they position you correctly for the airbag.
