New York's written test is 20 questions; you need 14 correct AND at least 2 of the 4 road sign questions.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ New York questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. New York requires you to notify the DMV of a change of address within:
A 10 days
B 60 days
C 90 days
D 30 days
The DMV sends notices to the address it has on file, so keep it current.
Q2. You are in the left lane of a highway and a line of traffic builds up behind you. You should:
A Tap your brakes as a warning
B Slow down to make them back off
C Keep your speed and stay put
D Move to the right lane when it is safe
The left lane is for passing. Once traffic stacks up behind you, moving right is both safer and, in many states, required.
Q3. An oncoming driver fails to dim their high beams. You should:
A Flash your high beams back and hold them on
B Close one eye and continue
C Stare at the oncoming lights
D Look toward the right edge of your lane and keep your speed steady
Watching the right edge line keeps you in your lane while your eyes recover. Retaliating with high beams blinds you both.
Q4. Speeding fines in a work zone are usually:
A The same as elsewhere
B Waived if no workers are present
C Only issued at night
D Higher than normal, often doubled
Most states increase work-zone fines and add penalties when workers are present, whether or not the crew is visible at that moment.
Q5. In New York, the law requires a car seat or booster seat until:
A The child turns 16
B The child turns 8, or is over 4 feet 9 inches tall or 100 pounds
C The child turns 4
D The child turns 12
State law is a minimum. Safety experts recommend a booster until the adult belt fits properly: lap belt low across the hips and shoulder belt across the chest, not the neck.
Q6. In New York, if an adult in the front seat is not wearing a seat belt:
A An officer may stop you for the seat belt violation alone
B Only the driver can be ticketed, never a passenger
C Seat belts are recommended but not required for adults
D An officer may ticket you only after stopping you for something else
This is a primary enforcement state: no other violation is needed. The belt is also the single most effective thing in the car for surviving a crash.
Q7. Switching on your hazard lights while parked illegally:
A Allows parking in a bus stop
B Does not make the parking legal
C Makes a short stop legal
D Allows double parking
Hazard lights warn other drivers; they do not create a parking permit.
Q8. In New York you may not park within how far of a railroad crossing?
A 15 feet
B 25 feet
C 50 feet
D 10 feet
A parked vehicle near the tracks can block the view of the crossing for trains and for other drivers.
Q9. The first ability alcohol affects in a driver is:
A Vision
B Reaction time
C Judgment and the ability to make good decisions
D Steering
Judgment goes first, which is why an impaired driver often believes they are fine. Reaction time, vision and coordination follow.
Q10. Black ice is most likely to form:
A In the middle of a sunny afternoon
B On steep hills only
C On bridges, overpasses and shaded spots
D On gravel roads only
Bridges and shaded stretches lose heat fastest. If the road looks wet but spray has stopped coming off other cars, suspect ice.
