Ohio's knowledge test is 40 questions and you must answer 75% of them (30) correctly. It is scored as one test, not as separate sections.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Ohio questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. A driver is following you too closely. The safest response is to:
A Turn on your hazard lights and keep speed
B Brake sharply to warn them
C Speed up to open the gap
D Slow gradually and let them pass
Increase your own space cushion and give them a chance to go by. Brake-checking turns their mistake into your crash.
Q2. School zone speed limits usually apply:
A Only on school buses
B 24 hours a day, every day
C Only during the first week of school
D During posted hours or when children are present
Read the sign: many zones are time-based, others use flashing beacons or a when-children-are-present condition.
Q3. In Ohio you must stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with red lights flashing unless:
A The bus is on a hill
B You are on a road with four or more lanes and travelling in the opposite direction
C You are running late
D Children are already off the bus
On a road of four or more lanes, only traffic behind the bus must stop. On roads with fewer lanes, both directions stop.
Q4. You are being passed by a large truck. You should:
A Stay to the right of your lane and let it pass
B Speed up so it takes less time
C Brake hard to help it in
D Move left toward the center line
Hold a steady speed and keep right within your lane. Air turbulence can push a small car, so keep both hands on the wheel.
Q5. Ohio's Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws recommends keeping a following distance of at least:
A One vehicle length for every 10 mph, or four seconds
B Ten seconds
C One second
D Two car lengths at any speed
Increase the gap in bad weather and behind motorcycles and large trucks.
Q6. A strong crosswind is pushing your vehicle. You should:
A Slow down and keep a firm grip with both hands
B Steer with one hand and relax
C Drive closer to large trucks for shelter
D Speed up to stabilise the car
Wind gusts are strongest in open country and beside large vehicles. Slow down, hold the wheel firmly, and expect a push when a truck passes.
Q7. An Ohio driver aged 16 with a probationary license may not drive between:
A 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
B 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. under any circumstances
C Midnight and 6 a.m. unless with a parent or guardian, or for work with documentation
D 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekends
At 17 the window narrows to 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., and the restriction ends at 18.
Q8. An exit number on a green sign tells you:
A The distance to the next city
B How many lanes the ramp has
C The speed limit on the ramp
D Which exit to take for a destination or route
Exit numbers usually match the nearest mile marker, which makes it easy to judge how far away your exit still is.
Q9. A flashing yellow arrow at a left-turn lane means:
A You have a protected left turn
B You may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
C Stop and wait for a green arrow
D Left turns are prohibited
A flashing yellow arrow is an unprotected turn. Oncoming traffic has the green, so you may only go when there is a safe gap.
Q10. In Ohio, if an adult in the front seat is not wearing a seat belt:
A An officer may ticket you only after stopping you for something else
B The rule applies only on interstate highways
C An officer may stop you for the seat belt violation alone
D Seat belts are recommended but not required for adults
This is a secondary enforcement state, so the belt alone is not grounds for the stop. That is a rule about enforcement, not about safety -- the crash risk is the same, and the ticket still follows any other stop.
