Virginia's exam has two parts. Part one is 10 road sign questions and you must answer ALL TEN correctly before part two is offered. Part two is 30 general knowledge questions and needs 24 correct.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Virginia questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. A driver is following you too closely. The safest response is to:
A Turn on your hazard lights and keep speed
B Brake sharply to warn them
C Speed up to open the gap
D Slow gradually and let them pass
Increase your own space cushion and give them a chance to go by. Brake-checking turns their mistake into your crash.
Q2. Seat belts work best because they:
A Stop the car faster
B Keep you in position and let the strongest parts of your body absorb the force
C Are only needed on highways
D Prevent the airbag from deploying
Belts keep you behind the wheel and away from the windshield, and they position you correctly for the airbag.
Q3. In Virginia, an applicant under 18 must log how much supervised driving before the road test?
A 20 hours, including 2 at night
B 45 hours, including 15 at night
C 30 hours, including 10 at night
D 40 hours, including 10 at night
A parent or guardian certifies the hours. Night driving is where new drivers crash most, which is why a share of the total has to be after dark.
Q4. The back of your car starts to slide to the right. You should:
A Hold the wheel straight and brake
B Ease off the accelerator and steer to the right, where you want to go
C Brake hard and steer left
D Accelerate and steer left
Steer into the skid: point the front wheels where you want the car to go, ease off the pedals, and make small corrections.
Q5. In Virginia, the move-over law requires you to change lanes, or slow down, when passing:
A Only vehicles stopped inside a marked work zone
B Stopped emergency vehicles and certain work or service vehicles showing warning lights, but not ordinary cars with hazard lights on
C Any stopped vehicle showing hazard lights or other warning signals
D Only stopped police, fire and ambulance vehicles
Move to a lane that is not next to the stopped vehicle when you safely can. When you cannot, slow down. People working at the roadside are struck every year by drivers who did neither.
Q6. Another driver is passing you. You should:
A Speed up to shorten the pass
B Stay in your lane and keep a steady speed or slow slightly
C Move onto the shoulder
D Brake hard to open a gap
Speeding up while being passed strands the other driver in the oncoming lane. Hold your line and let them complete the pass.
Q7. You should check your mirrors:
A Every few seconds and before every braking, turn or lane change
B Only before turning
C Only on highways
D Once a minute
Knowing what is behind you is what turns a sudden stop into a controlled one.
Q8. In Virginia, if you refuse a breath test or test at .08 percent or higher when charged with DUI, your driving privilege is automatically suspended for how long on a first offense?
A One year
B Seven days
C 14 days
D 3 days
Virginia's administrative license suspension for refusing a test or testing at .08 or higher is seven days for a first offense, longer for repeat offenses, on top of any court penalty.
Q9. A green arrow pointing left means:
A You may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic
B Left turns are allowed only for buses
C You may turn left and oncoming traffic is being held by a red light
D You must turn left
A green arrow is a protected turn. Still check the crosswalk for people before you move.
Q10. In Virginia, the maximum speed limit on rural interstate highways is:
A 75 mph
B 65 mph
C 70 mph
D 60 mph
That is the highest limit the state allows on a rural interstate. The posted sign always governs, and a lower speed can still be required by conditions.
