Tennessee's permit knowledge test is 30 questions, and you need 24 correct (about 80%) to pass.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Tennessee questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. A green arrow pointing left means:
A You may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic
B Left turns are allowed only for buses
C You may turn left and oncoming traffic is being held by a red light
D You must turn left
A green arrow is a protected turn. Still check the crosswalk for people before you move.
Q2. A funeral procession with its lights on is passing through an intersection. You should:
A Join the procession to get through faster
B Let the procession pass without cutting into it
C Sound your horn to clear the way
D Drive between vehicles if there is a gap
Do not cut into or interrupt a procession, even if you have a green light, unless directed by an officer.
Q3. In Tennessee, the law requires a car seat or booster seat until:
A The child turns 9, or reaches 4 feet 9 inches
B The child turns 4
C The child turns 16
D The child turns 12
State law is a minimum. Safety experts recommend a booster until the adult belt fits properly: lap belt low across the hips and shoulder belt across the chest, not the neck.
Q4. Worn tire tread is dangerous mainly because it:
A Uses more fuel
B Makes the car louder
C Loses grip on wet roads and raises the chance of hydroplaning
D Reduces the top speed
Tread channels water away. Once it is shallow, wet grip falls off sharply. Check with a tread gauge or the built-in wear bars.
Q5. In Tennessee, the move-over law requires you to change lanes, or slow down, when passing:
A Stopped emergency vehicles and certain work or service vehicles showing warning lights, but not ordinary cars with hazard lights on
B Any stopped vehicle showing hazard lights or other warning signals
C Only vehicles stopped inside a marked work zone
D Only stopped police, fire and ambulance vehicles
Move to a lane that is not next to the stopped vehicle when you safely can. When you cannot, slow down. People working at the roadside are struck every year by drivers who did neither.
Q6. You are driving through a residential street where children are playing. You should:
A Drive in the center of the road
B Maintain the speed limit
C Slow down and be ready for a child to run into the road
D Sound your horn continuously
Children act on impulse and are hidden by parked cars. Cover the brake and cut your speed well below the limit.
Q7. In Tennessee, effective January 1, 2018, using a hand-held phone in a marked school zone while a warning flasher is operating is an offense for:
A Only commercial vehicle drivers
B Drivers 18 years of age or older
C Only drivers with a learner permit
D Only drivers under 18
Tennessee's school zone cell phone law makes it an offense for a driver 18 or older to use a hand-held mobile phone in a marked school zone while a warning flasher is operating.
Q8. You are on a road that ends at a T intersection with no signs. You should:
A Yield to traffic on the through road
B Proceed because the through road must yield
C Turn right without yielding
D Stop only if a car is visible
At a T intersection the road that ends yields to the road that continues.
Q9. In Tennessee, the minimum age to apply for a learner permit is:
A 14, 6 months
B 15
C 14
D 15, 6 months
Applicants under 18 also need parental consent, and the permit must be held for a set period before the road test.
Q10. A bicycle on a public road is:
A Required to ride facing traffic
B A vehicle whose rider has most of the same rights and duties as a driver
C A pedestrian
D Required to use the sidewalk
Riders must obey signals and signs, and drivers must yield to them the same way they would to another vehicle.
