Texas doesn't publish its knowledge-test length and pass score on an official page we could confirm, so we don't state numbers here. The questions in this quiz are written in the style of Texas's knowledge test, and Texas's official driver handbook (linked below) is the source to study from.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Texas questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. A green arrow pointing left means:
A You may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic
B Left turns are allowed only for buses
C You may turn left and oncoming traffic is being held by a red light
D You must turn left
A green arrow is a protected turn. Still check the crosswalk for people before you move.
Q2. When you park facing downhill on a road with no curb, turn your wheels:
A It does not matter on a flat shoulder
B Toward the edge of the road
C Straight ahead
D Toward the center of the road
With no curb to catch the tire, point the wheels so a rolling vehicle goes off the road rather than into traffic.
Q3. In Texas you must have your headlights on:
A From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and whenever you cannot see 1,000 feet
B Only when it is raining
C Only between midnight and 5 a.m.
D From sunset to sunrise only
The half-hour margins cover dusk and dawn, when drivers most often forget. Poor visibility in daytime triggers the same requirement.
Q4. A standard drink of beer, wine and distilled spirits:
A Only matter for drivers under 21
B Differ so much that beer is always safest
C Cannot be compared
D All contain about the same amount of alcohol
A 12 oz beer, a 5 oz glass of wine and 1.5 oz of spirits each contain roughly the same alcohol, which is why counting drinks does not make you safe to drive.
Q5. After a crash in Texas you must notify law enforcement immediately if:
A The other driver asks you to
B Anyone is injured or killed, or a vehicle cannot be driven away
C Damage is over $100
D It happened at night
Stop, help the injured, exchange information, and stay until you have met those duties. Leaving the scene is a criminal offense.
Q6. You should dim your high beams when:
A Only in town
B Only when meeting oncoming traffic
C You are following another vehicle or meeting oncoming traffic
D Only when it is raining
High beams reflect off mirrors and blind the driver ahead as well as the one coming toward you. Dim for both.
Q7. In Texas, having an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public road is:
A Legal for passengers
B Legal if the driver has not been drinking
C Illegal, whether or not the vehicle is moving
D Legal if the vehicle is parked
The offense applies to the driver and to passengers, and it applies even when the vehicle is stopped on a public roadway.
Q8. When someone signals to merge into your lane, the safest response is to:
A Flash your high beams
B Adjust your speed to open a gap
C Speed up to close the gap
D Hold your position exactly
Letting a merge happen costs you a second and prevents a side-swipe.
Q9. Using a hand-held phone in a Texas school crossing zone is:
A Allowed for navigation
B Allowed if you are stopped
C Prohibited when the zone is in effect
D Allowed outside school hours only
Hand-held use in an active school zone is prohibited, and drivers under 18 may not use a wireless device at all.
Q10. Driving after using marijuana is:
A Only a problem for new drivers
B Legal where marijuana is legal
C Safe if you feel normal
D Illegal, and it impairs reaction time and judgment
Legal to possess does not mean legal to drive on. Impaired driving laws cover cannabis the same way they cover alcohol.
