Applicants under 18 take 46 questions and must answer 38 correctly. Adults 18 and over are given a shorter version (36 questions, 30 correct). This app practices the 46-question format.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ California questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. During the first 12 months with a California provisional license, a driver under 18 may not:
A Drive alone at any time
B Drive more than 50 miles from home
C Drive on a freeway
D Carry passengers under 20 unless a licensed adult 25 or older is with them
The first 12 months also restrict driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. without a licensed adult 25 or older in the vehicle.
Q2. Black ice is most likely to form:
A In the middle of a sunny afternoon
B On steep hills only
C On bridges, overpasses and shaded spots
D On gravel roads only
Bridges and shaded stretches lose heat fastest. If the road looks wet but spray has stopped coming off other cars, suspect ice.
Q3. Refusing a chemical test after a lawful DUI arrest in California results in:
A No penalty until you are convicted
B A 30-day suspension
C A warning for a first refusal
D A one-year license suspension for a first refusal
Refusal carries its own suspension under implied consent, separate from anything the court does, and the refusal can be used as evidence.
Q4. You should never park:
A Facing downhill
B On a residential street at night
C In a metered space after dark
D Within the posted distance of a fire hydrant
Hydrant clearance is set by state law, commonly 10 to 15 feet. Blocked hydrants delay firefighters and are towed.
Q5. Speeding fines in a work zone are usually:
A The same as elsewhere
B Waived if no workers are present
C Only issued at night
D Higher than normal, often doubled
Most states increase work-zone fines and add penalties when workers are present, whether or not the crew is visible at that moment.
Q6. The first ability alcohol affects in a driver is:
A Vision
B Reaction time
C Judgment and the ability to make good decisions
D Steering
Judgment goes first, which is why an impaired driver often believes they are fine. Reaction time, vision and coordination follow.
Q7. A driver is following you too closely. The safest response is to:
A Turn on your hazard lights and keep speed
B Brake sharply to warn them
C Speed up to open the gap
D Slow gradually and let them pass
Increase your own space cushion and give them a chance to go by. Brake-checking turns their mistake into your crash.
Q8. In California, the speed limit at a blind intersection, in an alley, or within 100 feet of a railroad crossing where you cannot see the track is:
A 20 mph
B 15 mph
C 10 mph
D 25 mph
15 mph covers blind intersections, alleys and blind railroad crossings. A blind intersection is one where you cannot see 100 feet in each direction in the last 100 feet before crossing.
Q9. Children must ride in a child restraint or booster:
A Until they meet their state's age, height or weight requirement
B Only in the front seat
C Until they are 5 years old everywhere
D Only on highways
Requirements differ by state, and the back seat is safest for younger children. A belt that crosses the neck or belly means the child still needs a booster.
Q10. During the first 12 months, a California provisional driver under 18 may not drive between:
A 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. under any circumstances
B Midnight and 5 a.m. without a parent
C 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. without a licensed adult 25 or older
D 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekends
There are documented exceptions for work, school, medical need and family necessity, each of which needs a signed note.
