Minnesota doesn't publish its knowledge-test length and pass score on an official page we could confirm, so we don't state numbers here. The questions in this quiz are written in the style of Minnesota's knowledge test, and Minnesota's official driver handbook (linked below) is the source to study from.
Pick an answer on each question to see whether you got it right, with an explanation.
This is a short sample — DriveDrill has 200+ Minnesota questions
and full-length mock exams in the app.
Q1. The best response to feeling drowsy while driving is to:
A Drink coffee and continue for another hour
B Open a window and keep going
C Stop somewhere safe and rest
D Turn the radio up
Drowsy driving impairs you much like alcohol, and micro-sleeps happen without warning. Only sleep fixes it.
Q2. The safest place to be around a large truck is:
A Where you can see the driver's mirrors
B Directly behind it
C Beside its right rear wheels
D Directly in front of its bumper
If you cannot see the driver's face in the mirror, they cannot see you. Trucks have large blind spots on both sides, in front and behind.
Q3. In Minnesota, a driver under 21 is over the limit with:
A any detectable amount of alcohol
B 0.05% or higher
C 0.01% or higher
D 0.02% or higher
This is a true zero tolerance state: any measurable alcohol is enough for a suspension, and mouthwash or cough syrup can reach it. The licence consequence is administrative and starts before any court date.
Q4. In Minnesota, during the restricted period, a young driver may carry:
A no more than one passenger
B no passengers at all
C no more than one passenger younger than 21
D one passenger younger than 20 for the first six months, then three
Crash risk for a teen driver climbs sharply with each additional teen passenger, which is what this rule is built around.
Q5. A wide white line across your lane at an intersection is:
A A lane divider
B A crosswalk
C A stop line showing where to stop
D A bike box
Stop at the line, not past it. If your view is blocked once stopped, edge forward slowly only after stopping at the line.
Q6. At night, pedestrians are hardest to see:
A Outside the reach of your headlights and in dark clothing
B Only near intersections
C Only in rain
D Only on lit streets
Most pedestrian deaths happen after dark. Lower your speed so your stopping distance fits inside your headlight range.
Q7. Before opening your door into traffic after parking, you should:
A Open the door quickly so you are exposed less time
B Check mirrors and look back for bicycles and vehicles
C Rely on other drivers to see the door
D Open the door and wait
Dooring a cyclist is a common and serious crash. Check the mirror and over your shoulder, and open with the far hand so your body turns toward traffic.
Q8. The road is most slippery:
A Only when it is freezing
B After several hours of heavy rain
C The day after rain
D During the first rain after a dry spell
Oil and rubber build up on dry pavement and float to the surface when rain starts. Slow down and double your following distance.
Q9. In Minnesota, using a hand-held cell phone while driving is:
A Illegal for all drivers
B Banned in work zones, and texting is banned everywhere
C Banned in school and work zones, and texting is banned everywhere
D Illegal for all drivers, but enforced as a secondary offense
The state requires hands-free operation for every driver. Novice drivers are usually barred from using a phone at all, even hands-free.
Q10. In Minnesota, the maximum posted speed limit on urban interstate highways is:
A 60 mph
B 70 mph
C 65 mph
D 55 mph
Urban interstates are held to a lower maximum than open rural highway, because of interchange spacing and traffic volume.
